Whenever I type one thing that has something following it such as x/y coordinates whatever is after that gets replaced by what I am currently typing. Is that supposed to happen? If not how do I fix it?

Did you try the insert key?
It changes your cursor appearance and tells whether you overwrite old text or insert text during typing.
(Not sure what you mean?)
