is, as you said earlier, probably the best way to handle, the other good default approach would be xdg-open
.

Yes, the key value entry was not there.
So the code searched per OS trying to to assign value to editor variable.
I have only one preferences txt file under the same path as yours.
Since xterm got installed the new entry got in place in the preferences file.
Then i changed that entry to point to gedit and it works fine.
