Maximum size of a method in Processing

Hi all,

I am analysing the heat transfer through a satellite in orbit. I have different nodes, which all have a certain temperature, for which the formulas I obtained via Matlab (which can handle them just fine). I calculate these temperatures every timestep in Processing by calling a function. These functions are rather complex. In fact they are so big that they exceed the maximum size of a function that I can use in Java:

How can I work around this problem? Maybe it is possible to link a .cpp file to my .pde file, as far as I know there is no limitation in C++? I can also manually break the function into multiple smaller functions, but that is a lot of manual work (and difficult, since there are lots of parenthesis in the function as well).

I hope anyone can help me out here, any advise is much appreciated.

as usual i not know what i am talking about,

but you could test JAVA 11
( if its just a java 8 limitation / and not processing / and changed ( up to ) in JAVA 11 ā€¦)

Iā€™m not 100% sure but by looking at the bottom of these pages there doesnā€™t seem to be a difference in this regard between java8, java11 and java13

@Thomas is the 64 KB limit broken by the length of the code or by data embedded in the code? If thereā€™s a lot of data, could the data be loaded from a text file instead?

It sounds like you are either using embedded data or code generation ā€“ or both. Could you say more about where these 64k+ methods come from and how they are created? How big are they ā€“ bigger than 128k? Iā€™m just guessing that you didnā€™t hand-write themā€¦

If you really want to, you can try using Java JNI or JNA to interface with C code ā€“ but there is overhead in setting that up.

Thank you all for responding. To clarify things, I set up the energy balances for each node using the symbolic toolbox from Matlab. These equations are then linearised and put into matrix notation, after which the system of linear equations is solved for temperature of each node (to generate an explicit expression for T1, T2, etc). I then copied these explicit formulas into a function like this:

Which is evaluated every timestep. This formula is up to 100k characters long. I already made all variable names as short as possible, which helped me initially to avoid the problem, but as Iā€™m adding more complexity to the system, the formulas are becoming bigger as well.

@kll how can I use Java 11 in Processing? And will this solve the 65kb limit?

@hamoid thanks for responding. What do you mean with ā€˜embedded in the codeā€™? I have not come across a method to do so, but if itā€™s possible to read a string from a text file and execute this string in my function, that would be a solution as well. The data is calculated every timestep, so the data will be created on the go so to speak.

@jeremydouglass I hope the above answers your questions. If it helps I can add a text file containing one of the formulas, but how can I do that in this discussion?

Is this a class method, and are all those terms variables that are members of the class?

My understanding is that the size limit is on bytecode.

If you are generating extremely long strings of terms that are multiplied and added, then I would recommend just breaking them apart at low precedence orders of operation ā€“ +/-.

Here is a simple code generator to do that for you:

This assumes that your linear equations have + in them and that the sub-terms will become methods that are smaller than the Java method byte limit. However, you could extend this rewriting approach to further break apart long terms with shared order of operations ā€“ and you could even test dynamically the String length of each term to detect where subdivision is probably needed ā€“ or not needed at all.

Another alternative to using smarter code generation (which breaks up the mega-expressions into submethods) is to instead try using code evaluation ā€“ for example, an embedded script engine that will allow you to create an evaluate your equations at runtime, outside the limitations of methods.

One option might be @quark 's QScript: http://www.lagers.org.uk/qscript/index.html

Another might be to use a embedded Javascript (Nashorn): https://forum.processing.org/two/discussion/15151/how-to-convert-string-to-a-line-of-code#Item_9

Thank you @Chrisir for your suggestions of the eval() function. This method seemed promising as first glance, but running the script below with my expression for T1 in testtextfile.txt gives me the following error:

test.pde:24:0:24:0: RuntimeException: Method code too large!

Which is the same problem I have been facing the whole time. The possibility to execute a string is interesting. This is the code I used:

But that beginning parenthesis was there for a reason. Somewhere in the big expression is the closing parenthesis. You canā€™t break up anything that is in between these parenthesis. We have to deal with a structure that is something similar to this (but could be anything):

(a + b - (c*d)) / (e + f/g)

As you might appreciate, this expression cannot be broken into sub expressions anywhere you want, only on specific places. Then you also have to take into account the fraction in adding or dividing the subfunctionsā€¦

P.s. to answer your question earlier: the function calculateT1() is not part of a class at the moment

Hi @Thomas ā€“ without you providing a full code example, there was no way of knowing whether that was a top-level parenthetical on your return statement, or if your return contained / or nested parentheses. Your example snippet had none (only arguments to pow), so I just guessed about what you were returning ā€“ and I guessed wrong!

Rather than using split, you can isolate your terms by parsing them. Regex is NOT recommended if you have arbitrarily deep nested ( ( ( ) ( ( ) ) ) ( ) ) terms. You could write your own parserā€¦ but QScript does already do that for you, so it might be worth tryingā€¦

so float A12, Pd, etc. are all global variables (properties of the PApplet sketch class)? Very approximately how many global variables are we talking about?

One could write an optimizer that reads that pde sketch from a text file and outputs a new simplified pde sketch. All the pow() are used many times and can be precalculated and stored as a one letter variable (as @GoToLoop was showing). There is a lot of repetition. I think zipping the file is telling: it goes from about 110Kb to 6.5Kb.

You might try the Jasmine library, it allows you to compile an expression stored in a string into Java byte code and then execute it as a stored routine. This might not work because it seems the 64k limit might be on the compiled code size and not the source code size.

  1. Why would you use ā€˜static finalā€™ when initialising floats?
  2. How did you replace all the powers? Ctrl-F and then replace with something else? I wrote a function like this to save two characters on the powers (so you can write p() instead of pow()):
