Immersive Lab - Open Call

** Open Call **

House of Electronic Arts Basel (HeK) and the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology of the Zurich University of the Arts (ICST) are jointly calling for applications from artists to join a residency and production programme.

We are looking for (a) European artist(s) willing to participate in a residency in Basel with the objective to learn how to work with the installation Immersive Lab and to produce a new work for it.

The Immersive Lab - developed by Daniel Bisig and Jan Schacher - is a unique sound and video space; in a ring-shaped arrangement it presents digital media produced in real time in a panorama projection with surround sound. The entire surface of the installation is touch-sensitive and allows visitors to interact and influence the content. The Immersive Lab has been further developed by the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (ICST) of the Zurich University of the Arts for several years as a platform for the realisation and presentation of artistic works.

In this immersive environment visitors can control live generated audio-visual media through touch-based interaction. We are therefore interested in proposals that consider the particular perceptual, collaborative and interactive setting offered by the installation. For this specific call, we welcome proposals that thematise how our physical and mental self-awareness is influenced and altered through digital media. The topic proposed is intended to be an encouragement but it is not an obligation. Selected artists will be invited to create their work during a residency in Basel between November 30th and December 15th, 2019. At the end of the residency, the artwork will be presented to the public at HeK during one weekend (December 14th and 15th, 2019).

** Requirements **

The artist(s) should possess technical and artistic expertise in the domain of media arts with a particular focus on real-time, audio-visual and collaborative forms of interaction. With respect to technical skills, the artist(s) should have experience in working with a creative coding software environment such as, for example, Processing, Max/MSP, Pure Data, Supercollider, OpenFrameworks, Cinder or similar. During the residency, the ICST team will provide conceptual guidance and technical support but cannot aid in the content creation nor provide software programming services.

** Application **

Applicants should hand in their submission, containing a cover letter, a recent portfolio including curriculum and a first proposal. Applications should be sent by email to the following address no later than September 22th, 2019: boris.magrini@hek.ch. Please use <Application Immersive Lab - Winter 2019> in the subject line of the email. Notification of selection will be given on September 27th, 2019.
