On July 20th 1969 exactly 56 years ago today man first landed on the moon. Later the event spawned many [lunar-lander simulations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Lander_(video_game_genre)) this [video](https://www.google.com/search?q=lunar+lander+vdu+game&newwindow=1&client=firefox-b-d&sca_esv=0f3f3d91d2ee70a0&sxsrf=AE3TifMKMYvev7Do39u3-dCI7Sw1EqcCAg%253A1752584726041&ei=FlJ2aI-YAoiwhbIP_7nF0Ao&ved=0ahUKEwiP-6Lw9r6OAxUIWEEAHf9cEaoQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=lunar+lander+vdu+game&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiFWx1bmFyIGxhbmRlciB2ZHUgZ2FtZTIHEC4YgAQYDTIGEAAYDRgeMgYQABgNGB4yCBAAGAgYDRgeMggQABgIGA0YHjIIEAAYCBgNGB4yCxAAGIAEGIYDGIoFMgsQABiABBiGAxiKBTIFEAAY7wUyCBAAGIAEGKIEMhYQLhiABBgNGJcFGNwEGN4EGOAE2AEBSJRGUL8HWOw9cAF4AZABAJgB6AGgAasOqgEGMTkuMS4xuAEDyAEA-AEBmAIWoAKAD8ICChAAGLADGNYEGEfCAg0QABiABBiwAxhDGIoFwgILEAAYgAQYkQIYigXCAgsQLhiABBixAxiDAcICCxAAGIAEGLEDGIMBwgIFEC4YgATCAgsQLhiABBjRAxjHAcICDhAuGIAEGLEDGNEDGMcBwgIFEAAYgATCAhEQLhiABBixAxjRAxiDARjHAcICBBAjGCfCAgoQIxjwBRgnGMkCwgIKECMYgAQYJxiKBcICChAAGIAEGEMYigXCAgoQLhiABBhDGIoFwgINEAAYgAQYsQMYQxiKBcICDhAuGIAEGJECGNQCGIoFwgILEC4YgAQYxwEYrwHCAgoQABiABBgUGIcCwgILEC4YgAQYkQIYigXCAgYQABgWGB7CAgcQABiABBgNwgIIEAAYBRgNGB6YAwCIBgGQBgm6BgYIARABGBSSBwYxOS4yLjGgB-fvAbIHBjE4LjIuMbgH-g7CBwYwLjEuMjHIB0o&sclient=gws-wiz-serp#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:0708cdaf,vid:UdheQXhZzWU,st:0) shows an early arcade video game in action.

The late 70s and early 80s saw the advent of home computers the arcade game soon made an appearance on them. There is a charm to the simple line graphics display used that I wanted to emulate in my own sketch.

This sketch started as a simple test platform using realistic data

- actual lunar module dry weights
- actual fuel loads
- actual acceleration due to gravity on the moon
- calculations use the true laws of motion

some data such as burn rates and fuel-to-thrust were selected by experiment.

Although this is a gallery item I welcome suggestions as to the future development of the program. You can access the working sketch and code from the p5js Web Editor [here](https://editor.p5js.org/quark-js/sketches/EDAW5z-SU). There are many constant values to experiment with.

Otherwise you can simply try and land it manually 🤔 using the throtle, although you might try the auto-throttle first 😁

To land safely the velocity must be \< 2 m/s 🫣 Enjoy!

Thank you for this @quark !

I remember watching this live many moons ago:

> **[The Eagle Has Landed: The Apollo 11 50th Anniversary](https://prologue.blogs.archives.gov/2019/07/19/apollo-11-50th-anniversary/)**
>
> From July 3, 2019 through August 7, 2019, a special featured document display relating to the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing is in the East Rotunda Gallery of the National Arc…

`:)`
