10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10 Can this be done in Processing? :grin: @jeremydouglass

That is some code golf right there. [image] paulstgeorge: Wow! Is that the leanest? Ever? You can still shave off the size and set n=10 to take advantage of the default size=100x100. for(int x=1,y=0,n=10;x<n*n;x++){int r=int(random(2))*n,t=x%n*n;line(t+r,y,t+n-r,y+n);if(t==0)y+=n;} That’s 99 characters. Other than that,I can’t figure out how to shave off a character – I tried a couple approaches with while, but it got just a bit longer.

y=0 …. wondering won‘t 0 be the default anyway so skip =0

[image] jeremydouglass: for(int x=1,y=0,n=10;x<n*n;x++){int r=int(random(2))*n,t=x%n*n;line(t+r,y,t+n-r,y+n);if(t==0)y+=n;} That would work in Python, but Java is “belt and braces” and requires int initialization. Java is a pretty tough language for a good code golf score. :wink:

People! Brevity is the soul of wit, golf, and much code. But many of the solutions here have something extra, and that is elegance. I suppose elegance is a short apparently simple statement (equation, sonnet, code, etc.) that when unpacked is huge and complex. An example would be the most beautiful equation in the world, "pow(e, i*PI) + 1 = 0”, seen in a freeze-frame of Lisa Simpson’s book cover in ‘MoneyBart’ and named after Leonhard Euler. I have been trying to find an elegant way to generate the permutations of all the members of a set. I can write code that does the job but it is far from elegant and certainly not brief. Perhaps this should be the subject of a new thread. e = e = 2.71828; // Euler’s number i = sqrt(-1); // imaginary

OK. Here goes: Is there an elegant way to generate the permutations of all the members of a set? @jeremydouglass

Almost 3 years later! Leaner (108 characters) than my last version (113 characters). size(530,530);for(int i=0,y=0,n=23;i<n*n;i++){int r=(int)random(2)*n,x=i%n*n;y=i/n*n;line(x+r,y,x+n-r,y+n);} size(530, 530); for(int i=0, y=0, n=23; i<n*n; i++) { int r=(int)random(2)*n, x=i%n*n; y=i/n*n; line(x+r, y, x+n-r, y+n); } [image] Another variation at 108 characters: size(530,530);int i=0,n=23;while(i<n*n){int r=(int)random(2)*n,x=i%n*n;int y=i++/n*n;line(x+r,y,x+n-r,y+n);} size(530, 530); int i=0, n=23; while(i<n*n) { int r=(int)random(2)*n, x=i%n*n; int y=i++/n*n; line(x+r, y, x+n-r, y+n); } And yet another version at 104 characters! size(530,530);int i=0,n=23;while(i<n*n){int r=(int)random(2)*n,x=i%n*n,y=i++/n*n;line(x+r,y,x+n-r,y+n);} size(530, 530); int i=0, n=23; while(i<n*n) { int r=(int)random(2)*n, x=i%n*n, y=i++/n*n; line(x+r, y, x+n-r, y+n); } I will come back in 3 years to revisit this! Maybe sooner… :) [image] Why You Should Take a Break from Coding Learning to code is deeply challenging, deeply rewarding, and can completely hijack your attention… You need to take a break. Reading time: 4 min read Back… This version has 103 characters: size(530, 530);for(int j=0,m=23;j<m*m;){int r=(int)random(2)*m,x=j%m*m,y=j++/m*m;line(x+r,y,x+m-r,y+m);} size(530, 530); for(int j=0, m=23; j<m*m;) { int r=(int)random(2)*m, x=j%m*m, y=j++/m*m; line(x+r, y, x+m-r, y+m); } :)

100 char: size(530,530);for(int j=-1,m=23,r=0;j 1?m:0)line(j%m*m+r,j/m*m,j%m*m+m-r,j++/m*m+m); which is size(530,530); for(int j=-1, m=23, r=0; j 1?m:0) line(j%m*m+r, j/m*m, j%m*m+m-r, j++/m*m+m);

109 char (p5js) setup=_=>{for(createCanvas(M=530,M),j=0,m=23;j { for(createCanvas(M=530,M),j=0,m=23;j<M;) r=random([0,m]), x=j%m*m, line(x+r,y=int(j++/m)*m,x+m-r,y+m) }

@micuat Nice! 99 char: size(530,530);for(int j=0,m=23,r=0;j 1?m:0)line(j%m*m+r,j/m*m,j%m*m+m-r,j++/m*m+m); size(530, 530); for(int j=0, m=23, r=0; j 1?m:0) line(j%m*m+r, j/m*m, j%m*m+m-r, j++/m*m+m); You can see the symmetry with this code I used for testing: size(550, 550); translate(10, 10); //size(530, 530); for(int j=0, m=23, r=0; j 1?m:0) { //r=m; //or r=0 for testing line(j%m*m+r, j/m*m, j%m*m+m-r, j++/m*m+m); println(j, j%m, j/m); } [image] :)
